it would do against a 3.5 litre straight six or a turbo car putting out 220bhp but if you compare more evenly like the turbo version of the porsche (240bhp) is the only fair way to compare as what you said is like a honda-engined rover coupe is not as good as an m3 :P

don't under-estimate a 944,almost perfect weight distribution,much better handling than the 91's that had gone before it and those made at the same time.good choice rob.i owned one for four years and it was great fun.

are the plugs on the back of the bulbs ok i have seen a few burn't/melting that caused dipped not to work.also check wires on multiplug to the stalk in case one has worked loose.
