£140 For a Bolt!

Post by 200SEI »

My Rover dealer seems to be a total dickhead....

Or thinks i am...

Ive misplaced the oil cooler centre bolt for my D16 engine.

Went to Rover the other day to order one and they said its non stock and they can't locate it.......

Apparently they have to order it specially but can only order a minimum of ten.....thats right TEN!

At 14 quid a shot that makes 140 quid for one measly bolt!!

The bolt in question is the one that runs through the oil cooler, bolts to the block and the filter screws onto it.

Im off to the scrappies this weekend to try and get one.....

Im not a happy bunny mind, this is holding up the rest of the project... :x

They can order what ever amount they want. I have ordered lots of different bolts/nuts in the past in 1's or 2's. They only tend to order very low value items such as trim clips in 5/10's as they cost so little its pointless sending out 1.

Find various bolts down the scrappys until you find one with the right thread, if the length's wrong, take the bolt down to your local fasteners outfit and grab a bolt of the right size.
Alternative is to buy a pitch gauge and ruler and measure it.

Not sure what the logic is with these '10 of only' items, I'm assuming they have them at the factory and they're not built to order.

Yes, Rover dealers are pulling this stunt, but they can order on just about all bolts in singular.

I posted here a good while ago how one Rover dealership here in Dublin (White Bishop Motors on the Long Mile Road) didn't have any oil filters for the T16 turbo and said they had to order them in batches of ten and if I wanted them to order them in I would have to buy them all.

Another one though (Ryan's Garage in Blanchardstown) are much better for parts and when I (over time) bought all of their stock of T16 turbo oil filters (unipart p/n GFE198) they just orderd in a new batch of ten (with new ADU part number) and didn't expect me to buy the lot in one go. They know I'll be back to them for more in due course.

Having stock is part of the cost of running a retail business, that's just the way it is. It seems ridiculous to want to force this cost onto customers in the form of getting them to buy their whole inventory of each item in case they might lose money by having to sell them over a period of time!

I had the same problems with gearbox shims.
They wanted me to by them in 10's, as they do not want parts sitting on the shef that they never sell.
It's just cost me £26 for 2 rear shock bolts 2 hub nuts and an exhaust bracket. :x

UOI's or Unit Of Issue's have always been a pain as its set at the factory and not the dealer so its really at the dealers discression wether they will put the excess on the shelf or tell you you have to order/pay for the whole amount though usually they will ring round local dealers to find said individual items than factory order them.
Prime example of annoying!! T16 valve stem seals
LUB100560B later type Unit Of Issue 1 great 16 on car
LUB10009B early type UOI 10 err?? DOH by my maths that means 8 cars later you've finally got that part number out of all stock. Now 8 early cars havin headgasket/valve stems done at dealer price, timespan.... at a guess we have only possibly done that at my place in last 7 years.

Can see both sides of it really-annoying for customer and dealer not wanting 'slowmoving' stock on shelf.

Cant justify price of this or grille bolts mentioned in other thread just trying to shine some light on it from other side guys.
Years ago they used to do a 'round robin' between all the dealers/wholesalers in the country to see if people had oddball/back-ordered/UOI/obsolete parts in their redundant stock, shame its no longer done really.

WE should all post up a list of the excess parts we have on another thread!
Might be that we can all help each other out here?

Deffo good idea i reckon, do it with part number as title so would come straight up on a quick bash a the search button maybe??

I like SMC(from memory)'s idea of puttin all redundant stuff on ebay and would be ace if every dealer could do it but the first time of doing it would take ages to sort with part/part number description/application having to be looked up for every bit.

OHHHHHHH YEEEEESSSSS! :)

I got one!

Found a 216 GTi in a scrappy, oil was already drained so i didn't get too shitty. It was balanced on top of a shitty Ford Grandad with a broken windscreen, i nearly fell through the absolute gem when i undid the bolt. Also cut my hand open on the exhaust too which was fun.

All in all, im happy as larry tho, it cost me a fiver.....

Rover can fook off if they think im paying for ten bolts i don't need!

Anyway, the bolt has some kind of pressure spring thing in it and it is kind of banjo like, it has loads of holes in it, wierd....

By the way, birmingham scrapyards only appear to have ONE twin cam Git, i went everywhere.....in the end its a big thankyou to Henry Taroni's scrappy!!!!
