sarcastic so and so

I can... and do. I have a terrible time with petrol pumps.. they click off constantly. I have to hold the nozzle at a stupid angle to stop it.. then sometimes they never click off and overflow
Oh, and without fail petrol splashes out and all over the rear quarter.
Actually thinking about it... I think that may just be asda pumps as last time I filled up at shell it was ok.
But in answer to your question... yes.. and the needle goes above the full line on the guage too.

Never had a problem brimming the 214, and not yet brimmed the vit, however, I was talking to the woman behind the counter at my local Shell station, and apparently Rovers and some other maker she said but I can't remember quite often have probs with the pumps clicking off if the tank has been run fairly low

I would feel too robbed filling my tank to the brim everytime. £20 a time for my my dear any day of the week.
The other advantage is if some scrote "got away" with one of my cars - they wouldnt have free petrol for the entire night!

you and me both. It takes an age to get £40 in the Ti. Pull the trigger to much and it clunks.
Brother had an early mk2 820i last year. Filling the thing up to the brim, I discovered a rotten filler neck that deposited about a gallon of petrol all oevr the floor of the local Sainsburys filling station. The attendant monkey was not impressed

Exact same on my old 214 and the 420 for me. If you hold the nozzle "straight" (as in, 90degs to the floor) then it will click like mad and you'll be there forever.
I've found you have to hold it at a 45deg (ish) anti clockwise angle, then you can fill as normal.
Another note... These cars are meant to have a 55 litre tank. On one occasion I managed to put 56 litres into the 214. On the 420, last week I ran it so low on the guage that I was getting scared. It had been under the redline for 10 miles or so. Filled it up and couldn't get any more than 45 litres in, and that was topped to the brim.

Same with my 800, if I put the noz in all the way it will click off almost straight away but if I do as you do, there is no probs. As for filling it up? Ok, not really £20 gives me 150 miles or so, more if I take it easy.

Stella now gone, Ruby is my baby now.

, I know how you feel...
The first time I filled the Coupe up, I had no idea what was going on when it kept clicking off... Took me about 10 minutes to put £5 of petrol in!!!
I never had a problem in the Metro, so I thought it was a faulty pump, I've now found that if I just put the nozzle in a little bit instead of all the way it's ok.

I changed the tank in the "stuart the fish" 216 gti as it was leaking from the seam. The fuel gauge needle was well in the red so I was hoping that there wouldn't be much petrol left in the tank. Actually there was a hell of a lot. I spilt about half of it and still managed to fill two 6 litre petrol cans.
So I reckon you can count on at least 10 litres, probably 15 when the needle shows "empty". That explains why I can rarely even fit 40 litres into my tank.
I believe all the fuel tanks are the same.

yeh but if you have it prepay you have to gues how much the tank needs.Say you think it wants 20 quids worth but it actually only takes 18 etc.
Yeh if its anything like the chip and pin! I just cant see why its so hard to type a number in!
You could have an optional system on the pumps though that means you can use it as a nmormal pump aswell.
That'd be a good idea, but loads of oldies wouldn't be able to use it and it would probably end up taking them longer...

I have the same constant clicking-off problem. So do most of the Rover owners I speak too.
IMO, I think the rover tanks are insufficiently vented, so as you fill, the tank pressurises and the pump clicks off. If I hold the nozzle only 2/3rds of the way in, it fills much better, but you can see air frothing out past the nozzle and escaping.
Some pumps are worse than others. The nozzle has a little breather tube in the end. Over time the ends of the nozzles get bashed up, and the tubes can become partially blocked.
Can fit almost £50 in the vitty if it's on reserve - it can be a long time standing in the wind/rain if you've only got a T-shirt on
