talk about gutted

Post by chilvers »

little story for you gents and ladies.

driving along quite happily in my 220 nasp.
a few more miles down the road i smell a strange burning coming from the vents. odd so i pulled over to investigate, pop open the bonnet have a look and i have no water, odd i thought but drove slowly to my house and filled it up with water.

later on i drove to work looked down at my engine temp and it was in the red :o , SHIV i thought pulled over straight away let it cool and drove to work.

my brother uses it i explain the situation to him and he drives it. until it breaks down and wont start again, he then gets it towed to the garage where i am informed that my head gasket has gone and to top all of that my clutch AND my header tank has split :x .

so far i have had my car in the garage for a week and the guy doing it is so busy my car is on hold (as i know him) so i am gutted.

sorry for my rant just thought i would let you guys know whats going on.

I hope you've done work oon it in the meantime, as I suspect the previous owner has. Mine hasn't been 'serviced' officially since I bought it, yet I am meticulous with maintenance.

If the oil hadn't been changed for 4+ years then you would have noticed when you bought the car. Assuming you looked at it before handing over the money ;)

In all honesty, You have a car that apparently hasn't been serviced in 4 years thats been driven around with an obvious problem. I would say you did well to get it to last as long as you have. I can't see how you can be gutted about that.

Sort the HG out and do a full service on it and it should be fine. Next time you have a problem with the engine, don't drive it untill you can either fix it/find out what it is.

Phooaar ... there's luvvly for you Swansea Boyo isn't it! ... Not..... bad luck anyway but, it's not the end of the world just yet.

As your car is a 220 it should have a T16 Rover engine. These can suffer a lot of abuse as yours has obviously done thanks to you and your brother and still survive although that is never certain.

Chicken or egg? Which came first .... coolant loss via split coolant header tank leading to severe overheating which damaged the cylinder head gasket or, severe over heating from some other cause resulting in split header tank, damaged head agsket and possibly seized engine.

Unless your brother really overdid things with your engine, it should be a reasonably simple fix. However, before any repairs someone who knows about these engines should have a close look to ascertain exactly what damage has been done and then suggest a course of repair action.

Assume nothing where cars are concerned.

In any event, learn from this experience and it will stand you in good stead for the rest of your motoring days. ALWAYS keep a close watch on any future car you buy, including new ones, by checking all the obvious things frequently until you are confident that all is well. This could mean more frequent checks than usual for the first few days or weeks of ownership.

Caring owners who check things usually have less problems with their cars. That is no coincidence.
Apparently ... in a parallel universe MGJohn drives ....wait for it..... A ..

How does the garage know the clutch is shot when they can't even start it?
