Rover 200vi - strange happenings

Post by fergy7197 »

My rover 200vi which has been ever so slighty modified is really surprising me. I have de catted the car along with just turning the airbox on its side so it keeps the same shape, now on the way to work today there was a scooby wrx estate in front of me, the road we go is called the lang whang (runs from carnwath to balerno near edinburgh) and i know the road really well, thiss scooby sinks the old sandal to try and show me iam a measly rover owner with a slower car, however mr scooby was surprised when iam not totally dissapearing in his RVM iam about 30 feet behind, we negotiate a few harsh bends and soon again iam indeed right behind him and can overtake him safely. I do so. to his surprise.

Is this really a case of good driver vs ego

or am i now beginning to realise what owning a hot hatch is really like??

has anyone ever really surprised themselves with their car??

Unless his was a Sport, there's no way a ~145bhp Rover will overtake an Impreza Turbo... sorry.

But yeah, I show people up all the time in the GSi. My best two are when a Laguna Diesel in the next lane was riding the clutch at the traffic lights. I hate people who do this and always set myself up for a quick start.

I booted it, they booted it... muchos smoke out of the Laguna (:D felt sorry for the people behind her). Upto 60 (the limit) and she's quite a way behind. I back off and she goes past giving me a nice sign as she passed.... I don't think she liked me after that

The other one is when I was playing with 2 guys in a BMW 328 Coupe. Booted it down a dual-carriageway keeping up with him pretty well, to a roundabout... I don't think he was happy that I was keeping with him around the roundabout as he then proceeded to do 50+ straight through a 30 sign :nonono:

I'm not an idiot so I slowed down to nearer the speed limit, but he just kept on going. Made me smile though.

Scoob WRX - 240ish hp, 140-155 at the wheels, 1250kg.
Vi - 145ish hp - 120ish at wheels, 1000kg.
You do the maths!

I thought the 220's were 1250kg. And  Yeah, it looks smaller... doesn't mean it weighs any less :P

That's a hell of a lot of transmission loss...

220 is about 1150kg, VVC coupe is 1090kg. If Rover managed to shave 90kg off when going to the bubble then that's pretty impressive :)

You'd be surprised what can keep up with a Scooby once they've lost the launch advantage AWD gives them. ;)

Drove quite a few over the years, wonderful off the line, but never found them all that impressive once rolling. I know for a fact that my Vit can quite comfortably keep up with anything less than an STi if they fudge the launch.

(And yes, I know two people with them, and yes, we've had a bit of a play  Off the line I'm absolutely dogmeat, but from about 30 upwards, very even.)

I agree with the comments that imprezas are very over-rated!

My old Gsi T used to absolutely destroy imprezas unless it was from a standing start and they launched it. Even then..it wasn't long before I caught (and passed  ) them.

That was when I had the tired old 115k engine that was down on power!

Still love the noise imprezas make though.
