Anyone know anything about ZT's?

Post by southside »

Im thinking of going to have a look at a ZT that a local garage has got up for sale tomorow. I had a quick look round it today and the bodywork and interior look really tidy. Its the 2.5 V6 190bhp. Its an 02 plate and its a p/x they're trying to clear and its up for £2500 and its got the leather and alacantra interior, climate control, all the toys, 18" straights, trophy blue but im not sure on mileage. Anything i should look out for?

VIS valves.. engines are quite solid.. beware of high servicing costs.. have a look on the xpf, the guys on there will tell you.

check the inlet manifold is nice and quiet as the vis-valves get noisy, and inlet manifiolds are £650 new, also the thermostat housings are known to leak(situated inbetween the banks of the engine(in the bottom of the v) and is a bit of work to fix).

check the state of the exhaust back box as they are a nightmare to get
hold of.

last thing i can think of is when will it need cambelts (they have 3!!!), as a cambelt service will cost you an arm and a leg, its a fair bit of labour to change them.

the newer KV6 doesn't suffer from the head gaskets like the 4 cylinder K series.

ZT 190's KV6 don't suffer head gasket problems, it was only the Rover 800 KV6 engines that had a problem, the ZT version was reseigned and is very good.

VIS valve problems can be fixed more cheaply now, so not £650 if you know where to go. If they fail the car still drives OK, just feels a bit down on power.

Cam belts can be done for about £450 or less.

Overall there are reliable motors so test drive and checkl the brakes/Clutch too.

they do suffer with hgf but its very very rare in my eyes, heck i run 260bhp through mine and because its only a weekend(ish) car it gets driven very hard, and i have no issues with loss's of coolant etc..

when i worked for rover hgf wasnt unheard off but its usually due to not being looked after etc.. or as said previous the thermostat leaking and the loss of coolant isnt noticed etc. which again comes down to not being looked after.

check the s/h but 2500 quid for a working zt on a 02 plate is a steal, belts are due every 6years or 90k
