Personally i love the noise of the atmospheric DV although it does start to get bit annoying after a while especially when your just pootling round town. But then i am also young. On the issue of what the DV actually does i once read that it prevents the turbo stalling as when you let off the throttle after acceleration the turbo is still spinning but the air it is sending to the throttle body has nowhere to go as the butterfly is closed (obviously not completely) so it hits the butterfly and comes back along the piping to the turbo causing the blades to stall. The DV simply releases this boost to the atmosphere in the case of an atmospheric DV. Or something like that! Like i say, i just read it somewhere so sorry if its basically wrong!? :)

Atmospheric, because i got one for free, yet to hear it go off on my car yet though :(

Re-circ do sound good, Graham with the BRM turbo has one, bit pricey for me, but does the job.

I'm quite like Tony220, i love making old women dive into bushes when they hear you dump!

No one posts in the debate area anymore, so thought i would!

Just fitted a nice big cone filter under my battery tray in my otherwise unmolested 420t.

Blimey- didnt expect the OE recirc dv to be so loud! I actually prefer it to a 'noisey' dv- they just sound like you've gone through a puddle.

had a dump valve or two on different cars for 6-7 years now ,
first one i had could'nt get enough of it ,
but then after a while ....the bailey dump valve i had
used to get really annoying on the motorway .
looks great tho..

some days i love the sound
some i don't (feel like a poser sometimes )

next time probably re-circulating..if i change the turbo..but id rather not dump hot gases back into the system so find a way of doing it keeping things quieter.

Im not bothered either way between atmo or re-circ DV's, and though the sound of an atmo DV is amusing, it's not the sound i like best from a turbo car no sir! I just love to hear the sound of a turbo spooling and the whistle it makes. The sound of a wastegate opening/closing is also very nice, and i even love the way turbo cars sound different and much deeper than a nasp, when just idling on the drive, the exhaust note is just so different and slightly muted/deep, compared to the loud hollow rasp of an N/A car's exhaust. Having said that i do quite like the hollow loud echo'ey sound of a hard revved VTEC Honda engine with a Rice racer 4-5" tailpipe. I can hear those Civic's from Fast and Furious in my head as i speak! Maybe thats even more childish than wanting to go psssssssssht all the time!

[quote="MarkCoupe"]There is nothing greater in life than noises various engines etc make, v8's, fto V6's at 9k rpm, the ticking from an N2O solenoid and bovs, this is the one on my car :
[/quote]

well, im going to add another one to the "young drivers like to make noise" lark...

i too am young, and will definitely be fitting an ATMO as part of my conversion, i just like the sound.

when mines done i'll be hearing the purr of the exhaust, immediately followed by the roar of the exhaust WITH the clicking of the nitrous pulsoid, followed by the TSSSHHH. i'm looking forward to it all, lol...

i personally prefer the re-circ. probably because its already fitted and i cba spending the cash on a atmos DV when it'll do the same job as what my re-circ already does. also i dont want that oily cack sneezed all over MY engine bay :P

Has anyone else noticed the date of this thread? Ah well, I might as well join in now that it's active.

I had a guy in a nice black Impreza STi yesterday. He looked about 40, yet he was quite happily letting his HKS SSQV do its job.

got to be recirc/standard for me,
used to love the aftermaket, whoosh
but now prefer std d/valve(can be heard through large filter anyway), and listen to wastegate chatter instead

I prefer a re-circ with a good filter, at the moment i've got a k&n panel filter and the OE re-circ and as said earlier its a very subtle tsssht so people who actually know a little about cars think "the grandad mobile is actually turbo'd"

Saying that, I enjoy the noise of an atmospheric dump valve but just not on my car!

Wastegates don't chatter. In fact they make no noise at all unless its an external wastegate with a screamer in which case they make one hell of a racket when the car is on boost. The noise you are referring to is simply the sound of the air rushing the wrong way back through the compressor wheel causing compressor stall.

The atmospheric dump valve is there to create a vaccum for the compressor wheel to spin in . Hey , I want everyone to look at my car , its the end off an era .

BOV , or blow off valve , is the future . woosh woosh .

The thread predates the phpbb3 upgrade. You will need to ensure you tick the option at the bottom of the post that says "Attach signature". Also worth unticking "disable BBCode" as well if you are quoting. :)

My huge atmos Blitz Supersound bov for me. It has a really nice loud (but not excessive) soft sounding whoooosh to it. Sounds classy (if thats possible) compared to some of the thinner, harsher sounding dumpers I've heard.

My car makes a lot of different sounds to be fair. The metal coned air filter sounds EXACTLY like Darth Vadar (I swear I heard it say "your powers are weak old man" once) followed by the loudest turbo whistle i've ever heard on a car, then the Blitz chirps up releasing it's almigty sigh!! You would have thought I'd have grown out of all this by now.

keeping old threads going since 1981 - for me anything will do, although my vitesse just has a cone filter so i can hear the chatter, but when the loud pedal is on the floor and i change gear it sometimes has a little squeak which sounds cool, but its seems to be down more to the atmosperic conditions at the time, my coupe has the piston type which has loads of different sounds at different revs so it keeps it interesting.
