Re: who owns a Wedge shaped Rover. 216 gti, gsi etc?
I 'think' the owner of this one is only keeping it because it's got a personal plate. Once a car has been SORN for over 12 months you can't remove the private plate without taxing again. Also, I 'think' he was banned from driving which is why it was laid up in the first place. It's a very original example.216gtiOwner wrote:For the last couple of weeks my mate keeps seeing an immacualte 420 gti parked outside a house on his way to work. I'd considered offering him something for the car until I found out it was a NASP

What do you mean by NASP?
I guess you mean Naturally Aspirated. I'm not a mechanice but I thought any car thats not a turbo is NASP.
Sorry, I'm not that clued up on all car stufd. Althought I can turn my hand to some stuff when fixing them.

The plan with mine is to restore it to its former glory, I saved it from being cubed I think it's a well known car on the forum, it needs a lot of welding, hopefully I can get it sorted for pol 2015 money and time permitting of course

I used to have a 5dr 214sei wedge. Well, had two to be exact. There used to be a lot more around here, a lot of the turbos got the engine taken out for bubble 200s/ZRs/ZS's etc.

OKAY SO QUESTION TO YOU ALL THEN...
Some of you have been on this site for years, sooo...
Is this it??? Are we honestly only looking at about 4 members on this site having these shaped Rovers?
and if you can answer that, answer me this...
Who thinks these cars are going to be worth money in the near future? Where would you place them in respect of how sought after they will be. I don't see them being up there with Cosworths, so what do you guys think?? Where would you place them?

Everything comes to those who wait but yes, I don't think there are more than a handful around.
With regard to value, erm, no they are not really a financial investment like say a series 1 RS turbo but its nice to be different.

In terms of Rover owners and a large forum user base you're 10 years to late.216gtiOwner wrote:ghall2004 wrote:10 years too late

Rover ownership particularly of the earlier R8 models is fairly low now
I rarely see them on the round here for example. Even the R3 200s are getting scarce.

I thought that's what you meant.
I'm dissapointed mate to be honest. How can such an awesome car just fizzle out. I suppose it's all down to the fact that Rover went bust. No parts, or scarce parts, meaning there was no point keeping the cars.

On the road around here I meant. Stupid phone is autocorrecting me.
Plenty of threads on here and other Rover forums about dwindling ownership. We've all got our reasons why we still run them.
there will be a point where people might look back at them with rose tinted glasses but it won't raise their value much.

I'm glad your finding it funny. I'm sitting here restoring one with brand new parts piece by piece. Just spent £10.00 on 1 washer.

Gold plated washer?
Factory standard and mint is where the money is for older Rovers
I'm sure others will have views on this too.

Re: who owns a Wedge shaped Rover. 216 gti, gsi etc?
Hi guys, Ive never posted much before, im just a reader usually but this thread made me want to say hello! I still run a 3 door 216GTi as my every day car. Ive had it 15 years and i'll never sell it. Ive kept it going through thick and thin, its now done 174,000 miles, its on its second engine, been smashed into and cat c classified, and suffered with rotten sill syndrome in its time, but every time something needs fixing i always get it repaired because i couldnt bear to scrap it. I can honestly say that i still love it just as much now as i did in 1999 when i first bought it as a 22 year old kid who wanted something different to the usual Astra, Nova, Fiesta, Escort crowd. The 3 door R8 hatchback is a fantastic looking car even today in my opinion.
There's still 4 R8's knocking about around my way other than mine that i know of, but they are certainly a dying breed now. Its only in the last 2 years or so that ive realised im now driving something different on the road, and have recently had a few positive comments off people regarding my car saying how much they like it because they "dont see these on the road anymore", which is nice. Like 216gtiOwner pointed out, it is such a shame they are disappearing as they really are great cars.
Good luck with the restoration by the way 216gtiOwner, fair play to you for saving one, its nice to know there are other people out there who love the Rover GTi's like i do! Be nice to see some pictures of it when its finished

Re: who owns a Wedge shaped Rover. 216 gti, gsi etc?
I do the restorations for the fun of putting cars back on the road.
I know i'll never get anything like the money I put in them but as far as I'm concerned, its an education (addiction).
To me the value of the car is how it makes you feel, if you like the car, you'll do the work and spend the money without a thought.
Sometimes I do it to prove a point that a car shouldn't be scrapped just for the sake of it.
Take my vvc coupe:

All it took was new doors, new wings, new bonnet, new front bumper, new exhaust, new brakes front and rear, to a total cost including buying the car of £850.
Now its a daily driver

You can do restorations to any value if you want concourse or you just want the vehicle usable and unfortunately only you can make that decision.

^ wow havent seen new rear quarters for years now!!! thats going to be a nice 3dr once you're done
i have a black 220GTi non turbo, bought it as a project since having my minter ZS diesel wrote off last year. Ive owned a ZS180 since but sold it to make way for another 3dr wedge
Its currently in bits too as im converting it to turbo diesel (25 diesel setup) so i can afford to drive it everyday no matter how skint i may or may not become in the future - otherwise id of converted it to T16 turbo since its ALOT easier to do. Im hoping to have it on the road within weeks, got a whole host of goodies for it, variable vane turbo, MG ZR diesel front/ZS rear struts, MG hairpin wheels, new window regs, ZR column, subframe and steering rack - bulkhead pocket mods currently under way to fit it - should be nice once finished i cant wait

Complete respect to you Dave, but that has got to be the most challenging Kinder egg I've ever seen

It will look awesome if you ever finish it
