205 GTi 1.9......

Post by 200SEI »

I'm sure one of these little buggers should be quicker than my car...

Anyway, a rather tidy 1.9 GTi came up against me, as we both left the island (private track) i was just infront  :drive:....

Came off the island, bout 5500 rpm (pulls hardest at this point) in second, roared down the straight, i was actually pulling away slightly, into third (SOHC box gives a slight flat spot from second to third), i wasn't pulling away anymore, he gained slightly but once the trusty 'D was past 5500 again the gap opened up, the brakes were fading as i slowed down at the next bend!!!(not too good these standard brakes)

I let him past after that, very amusing i thought, i wouldn't have expected this with the weight, power and torque of a 205 GTi !?

He was certainly trying and the car was no knacker, perhaps he just wasn't a great driver :P

Unless he was a loser with 1.9 badges and wheels....even a 1.6 should have been neck and neck i would have thought.

My cars no slouch, but im not so sure its quicker than a 1.9.

Then again, they are old cars now and my engine is like brand new!

The (standard) figures for a 205 GTi are as follows:

Power - 130bhp
0-60 - 7.8 seconds
Max speed - 135mph

Compare this to a D16 DOHC powered 216:

Power - 130bhp
0-60 - circa 8 seconds (from memory)
Max speed - ??

The Pug has a reputation for good handling, but this was a fairly straight run. There'd be very little in it if the Pug was standard (ish).
Roverlessness - what a strange feeling!

It is difficult these days to spot proper 1.6 and 1.9 GTI's, on a straight run as Craig said not a lot in it, it would be the twisties where it would show it's true colours.

I do miss mine

Yeah, I was well impressed as the GTi was quite new to me at the time. I'm not gonna exagerate and say I panned him but he couldn't shake me off.

cool, sounds good. D16 DOHC is deffinately a strong competitor against a fair few of the older cars with bigger engines, pug and ford etc. They certainly make decent enough power for their size :)

Ive got EBC GreenStuff at the mo, i would have thought they were as good?

Its not just the power output thats good from the DOHC, its the power delivery thoughout the range. I think this is due to the flat(ish) torque curve.

Has anyone got a power/torque curve for a D16 DOHC (near standard) i could see.
