I think a handful were built after production stopped in 1996, probably just to use up the bits left laying around. Late registrations can't be more than 2 years old, otherwsie they get at age related plate, as far as I know.

Was it the crash damaged one? someone on rover coupe.com bought it and broke it for spares.

I bought it, and broke it.
It did look as thought it was made with all the left overs.
It was a shame to break it, but had been stored under trees and the paint work had gone.

very true indeed! The question is though, which is best:
An original Escort RST that was one of a limited number made, which if mint and has alot of history can be worth a silly amount of money for an Escort.
or:
A stripped and re-built XR3i, with all the bits taken from a crashed but not neccassarily worn out RST, and the whole job done well to make it look like the real thing? Now we have a car that could have been built to a far higher spec, and had better quality parts fitted, but seeing as it is not an original, it can never be worth anything like the inflated price that a real one arguably is worth?
If you take into account things like RST's were possibly more sought after by theives, and job rider's etc. Also there's less of them to choose from and a large number of tatty thrashed or ruined ones about. I dare say that a higher percentage of them were crashed and written off than XR3i's were, so all im saying is that surely it's possible to have a replica thats actually a better car than a real version of a car that is hard to find and often over priced. This also goes for any car, from a Cosworth Sierra to a Golf G60 etc etc.

I'm with you on that one i bought a Citroen AX GT 1.4 and a Citroen AX Dimension i had a SHITE body GT so i swapped the KIT/INTERIOR over to mine and the K&N Induction Kit, Samco hoses and was offered £750 for it the other day!
BUT.... being as it was a replica and people on ebay are more sceptical i only got £380 in the end and bought my coupe for 350
