leaking power steering fluid-216 d series lump

Post by al_leeds »

typical! two weeks away and i come back to find my car playing up!

As I walked towards the car i noticed some fluid underneath the passenger side front wheel, as it was getting dark I just thought it was water. Start her up and she starts on the button, reverse out of the drive way and in the headlights I can see more or less all the (im assuming) remaining power steering fluid being deposited over the nice clean driveway, and as I turn to get out of the driveway I notice the steering wheel has gone very heavy.. brilliant! Switched the engine off, rolled her back onto the drive and went straight to bed- after a 9 hour flight that was exactly what I didnt need!

Can I drive it to the garage without the power steering working? or is it a tow truck job?

Car with failed power steering system is a lot harder to drive than a non-power steering car. The drive belt went on my Mk1 once and as Grawolf said, it's a bit of a beotch to steer. You may find the metal pipe is split near a weld or similar.

it was leaking from the steering rack-£110 for a reconditioned rack :o :o :o
Still its all sorted now- I got them to sort out a few other bits and bobs including sticking her back on to standard suspension (i really must be getting old because i actually prefer the softer ride!) and sorting the exhausts (aka drainpipes) out.

After all that I hope she gives me a trouble free winter!
