Just been on the phone for about an hour with my insurance company, because my docs came thru today.
They want to know what type of alarm I have fitted to the Ticky.
I asked them why, and was told that they need to know the spec
"Its a Rover alarm", what else do they need to know
Is there a way of finding out without going to a garage to confirm
(i.e. website, or even from the ecu serial numbers e.t.c,)
thats all i ever say they always seem happy with that

They probably think the car is something it isnt, especially if you told them it was a Tickford.

There's nothing in the Mk1 workshop manuals that I can see.
They're being twats. If you took it to a garage they wouldn't know either. The only people that really know what it is are the company who made it (probably lucas) and whoever speced it from rover 20+ years ago.
Even if you do find out the make and model number they'll then realise it isn't listed on their drop-down menu
I'd ask to speak to someone who knows WTF they're talking about, or take your business elsewhere...

Name and shame the insurance company. It sounds to me like they are trying to screw more money out of you claiming the alarm ist recognised. I dont think the tickyalarms are cat 1 recognised are they but if they are then any decent alarm fitter would be able to do you a Thatcham caertificate to send off to them for a small fee.
phone back ask to speak to supervisor somewhere in conversation after mentioning all above
Rover bust
no info on alarm over 10yo
cant take anywhere without insurance
Then mention trading standards and your money back will sort the problem (FAST)
IF IT’S NOT BROKEN BRAKE IT THEN YOU HAVE EXCUSE TO UPGRADE IT
the fob is infra red / non rolling, you can learn the code with the casio remote watch, and disarm the 'immobilliser' and open the central locking. the fob/receiver are matched pairs, i do not think there receiver and CCU are coded together. However, the signal from the receiver to CCU is not just an 'on', its a code (bot not vehicle specific).
the immobiliser prevents it from cranking, and also sounds the alarm should you try and activate the ignition.
the only way to disarm is unlock by fob, or unlock by the key, but the key switches are prone to fail on old doors, the way to tell if its succesfully unlocked and signalled alarm ecu propperly is to check the interior light flashes.
lights will go on when succesfully unlocked. do not open the car until the lights have flashed if you are using the key.
light wil flash twice in succesion to confirm that the car is locked and the alarm ecu has been signalled by the door switch to arm the car.
boot has a switch aswell so you dont have to turn the alarm off to open the boot.
anyways, just tell them its a standard rover alarm. Im not sure of the Cat 1 sepcification or if it meets it.
Sounds like you got a numpty that doesn't know what they're talking about! If I get one of those I hang up and ring back hoping to get someone who may know what they're doing!
Soon as they start giving me hurdles to cross I say no don't bother I'll go elsewhere thank you! Most soon change the attitude, and then have a cob when you say thanks, I have a few others to ring before making a decision!
