We brought a new VW almost 18 months ago and wondered why the Salesman called us yesterday just checking if everything is going alright with the car.

You know when something is very serious in the automotive news when it makes Monday morning news!

They won't be the only manufacture, just the first to get caught.

Pretty sure every manufacturer has done similar, because of the BS test they are supposed to pass not reflecting real world conditions, producing artificially low targets for everyone and keeping the government happy!

Ive always said that VAG and BMW diesels really stink compared to other brands when theyre running in the workshop. Its such a sickly, eye stinging almost choking gas being emitted and they smell identicle! Never thought it was suspicious like

Yet you dont get this with Merc/LR/Fench/ every other modern diesel that comes in.

Be interesting to see who else is up to no good

I find when you follow a much older car you get a slight smell of fuel but when you follow a modern car it stinks. Something is not right and this vw scandal will hopefully help sort it all out.

We dont tend to see many diesel Fords at our place, mainly these Fiesta ST's - ill have to check it out.

Its certainly all quite interesting, even more so that the french n merc diesels use that DPF fluid/Adblue yet the rest don't

I should imagine that JLR arent hiding anything judging by the road tax band of their diesel vehicles over the others.

Rover had the right idea, just limit the Hp/Tq to keep the emissions down
Mad really, the road tax is similar between a stock 99hp ZR TD and a mk4 Golf TDi 150

I do love German engineering - it keeps us very busy :P

I saw a post on a US forum where some guy had label printed some new badges for the back of his VW

It goes below the TDI badge and reads:

Haha i know my pal had one just like yours, couldnt believe his and my at the time ZS 115 were the same £120 tax rate.

I have to suck it up with my conversion as its a R25 diesel engine in place of a 1993 2.0

Hopefully stories like this will change the public perception of a bland diesel yawn mobile being the car to have (no matter what the annual mileage) and make the 2nd hand car market a bit more interesting in a few years.

The official line from JLR is that they don't use any tampering devices or software and don't cheat on their emissions. Hardly surprising given the tax bands they fall under as mentioned, plus they're all built by Ford anyway except for the new generation of inlines.

Do all the affected cars have cam operated injectors? (rare in passenger cars)
Might be an inherit issue?

No it is the bosch engine management which had the emissions test defeating software built in. I would guess that all such bosch engine managment equipped cars will now be under increased scrutiny as they could all have cheated tests if they chose to.

Are you saying no they dont have cam operated injectors, or no its purely the software?

As far as I know it doesn't matter on the injector type. The ecu software allows the cheating and it is the ECU that fires the injectors in modern diesels.

I was just wondering if VW had an actual reason for cheating, rather than just being a bunch of greedy nazis

Yes. You can make a car perform far better (both economy and performance), if the emissions can be "cheated".

Therefore if you cheat your car performs "better" than the competitors so you sell more of them.

Lets face it, it isn't the first time that the Germans have been gassing people and lying about it.
