NCB on quotes
Right, I'm in a bit of a pickle right now. My insurance is up for renewal this week, and I was intending to get a policy in my own name from Quinn as they offered the only sane quote of £1300, but now thats gona up by a grand so thats totally out of the picture. I tried calling them to find out why and they reckon its because of my new address in Birmingham, which I think is rubbish as the orginal quote was with the Brum address.
So now my only hope is to get a policy in my Dads name with me being the main driver and the car staying at my address. However, he doesn't want to lose his NCB from his car.
Basically, if he gets a second policy on my car and declares 4 years NCB will they dissappear from his policy?
I read recently on here that its possible to "mirror" NCBs so gonna give that a go, but Quinn (who did the cheapest quote so far with the NCBs) don't do mirroring of NCBs.
Any help much appreciated.
Cheers,
Stefan.

I've shopped and shopped and shopped and the cheapest I can get is now 1500 at my old address. Nothing sensible, ie 1500 max so far. Cheapest so far for my Brum address is £2300
Only places I haven't tried are brokers and smaller companies - yet. Got Wednesday free to hunt around a bit more.
My original intention was to get my Dad to renew the existing policy, then come January when I get loadsa money from grants etc and I magically turn 20 (insurance goes down) I was gonna get my own policy. I think in hindsight I should have waited 3 months longer to get a Coupe as then the insurance renewal would always come after my birthday so would work out cheaper until I hit 26 year after year, but I just couldn't wait lol.

Tried Elephant mate? Maybe we got lucky but me and the ex insured her new Mini in Cardiff town centre (oh my god!) for less than it cost at my home address (which is pretty rural).
Not sure about the NCB mirroring but worth a go...
They quoted me silly on the MV6 though

as a general rule you can only have 1 set of ncbs for one car.
Some insurers will allow you to mirror them and some will give you them for free if you have been on someone else policy( eg direct line).
Have you checked to see how mutch (if at all) your policy will go down after you turn 20?
You will start to call brokers, Aplan / motor direct, adrean flux and the others will be your only hope.

Greenlight ent much good as they don't insure anyone under 21
Gonna renew the existing policy for another year me thinks, then short term cover to cover the 2 months until I turn 21 the year after next, unless I can get a decent quote when I hit the big 2 0
I think I've tried every insurer in the UK these last few weeks, apart from local brokers, but TBH I very much doubt they'd beat the renewal
At least it looks like I'm gonna be back on the road with a new MOT, new tax and new insurance by the end of the week and will finally be able to go out and drive - these past 5 or 6 weeks have been a nightmare

Endsleigh are one of the companies that waste your time by giving obsurd quotes, I think theirs was something like £5000ish. So much for them specialising in young people and students. I don't see why they even bother giving quotes like that as you'd have to be an idiot to pay that much. They've got a shop/kiosk next to the SU shop, so if I'm bored and I've got some time on my hands I might pop in and waste their time for a change lol
Fair enough... if you like paying hideous amounts every year.stefaclese wrote:Well I'm not going to let insurance companies dictate what car I should drive
NCBs can be used on one policy only, plus if you get it in your dads name it's technically insurance fraud.
If you want a performance car at a young age, with no NCB then basically you have to pay a lot of money. Not really much you can do. £1500 is less than a lot of people pay.
Personally I waited til I was 21 and bought a 1.6, the most I've ever paid for insurance was my first year @ £850.

I think it looks like my uni grants are gonna pay off the rest of the insurance premium in January as I don't really have any other expenses anymore.

Yeah but you're 21, thats when insurance starts getting cheaper
I think Kwik-fit come up on confused.com, in which case they won't be cheap as the cheapest was Quinn, the next being quite a bit more.
confused wont find you the cheapest quotes though.

Elephant.co.uk FTW!
Policy in your name and stick a female (with a half decent driving record) on as a named driver.
I'm just turned 24 and only paying £500 fully comp for my clio 182!
Also try Chris Knott...I was with them when I got my 220 Gsi T at 19. I had no NCB and a fault claim on my record - I paid £1600 TPFT. The year after, it went down to 1175 then 900 odd.
Elephant are ok with a few mods but you can't go nuts. Suspension, exhaust and filter cost me £28 extr in total.

Of course it doesn't help that I'm living in a scabby area of Birmingham as well
The difference between me living back in Oxfordshire and here in Perry Barr is £900 insurance wise with Quinn, even though the cars safer here as its kept in a private restricted access car park with 24 hour security and key card access barriers blocking the only exit, where as in Didcot it'd just be parked on the street

Have you explained this to the quote givers?stefaclese wrote:Of course it doesn't help that I'm living in a scabby area of Birmingham as well![]()

Quinn don't take that in to account, however Norwich Union do. My Dad can't renew the insurance as it ran out on the 12th and because the cars now kept in Birmingham. However Norwich now do pay as you drive for 18-23 year olds now rather than 24 and older, so that my only option now. Its a bit carp though as it costs £1 per mile driving between 11pm and 6am (fooks me over if I get a job working nights), where as its 3.3 pence between 6am and 11pm.
With the approximate mileage I'm likely to do in the forseable future it works out to between £1200 and £1600 for the year, depending on my monthly miles.
Hopefully I'll find some decent quotes when I hit 20, as I don't like the thought of having to restrict my miles, but then again I ent gonna driving much for the time being anyway, just driving home weekend after next, a couple of local meets, and going down to my Nans over Christmas.
