The Rovertech Team

Post by GeraintUk »

After watching over the forum the last few days whilst completing the migration work, I’ve now been able to persuade two more suckers (sorry, respected RT people) to join the moderation team.
This should hopefully give a bit more widespread cover at most times of the day and night, especially with some mods spending less time here than in the past.

So, here’s the makeup now of the RT Site Team !!!!!!

Admin
GeraintUK
Website designer (when I sort someone out)
pHpBB person (as above)

Club Mods
Clare
Sharky
AGW_01

Forum Mods
216Si
AndyR
Bjorn
Fordimus Prime
IrishRover
Mark
Neil F
Null Byte
Si
Stu
Subcat001
And bringing up the rear as always….Grant620

There we go, hopefully this will keep the place ticking over nicely whilst we try to implement some new ideas around the club side.

The site is migrated to the new hosts, but still rebuilding the Search Database, it’s a very slow process doing it whilst keeping the forum up….about another 3 days I’d reckon.

Also looking into the possible upgrade to pHpBB3, as well as someone to actually carry it out.

All the best
Geraint.

I wondered that too, surely if some mods are spending less time then it makes sense to pass the responsibility onto someone else? :?

I don't think it's about mods not spending much time on the board, but more that if there's a larger selection of mods, there's more chance of at least one being on the board at any one time.

People have commitments in real life and so just having 5 or 6 mods who say they'll be online frequently, something could happen which would leave them unable to moderate the board.

That could equate to quite a large gap when the forum is ran without a moderator online.

I thought Grant and Bjorn were too busy to look after the forum (hence the whole Steve Child incident) so I expected that they would be dropping off as moderators :?

If you can't think of anything constructive, why bother?

All G has done has let people know who the team are.

Beej and I have been asked to stay on as Mods as we are often on at odd times. It's not a problem for us to do moderation if we happen to be on.

However... If you'd rather we weren't then so be it.

As has been said, there is a need to have coverage at most times.

People complain when some p0rn or the like gets posted and we don't react quick enough. We address the situation, and the same people still complain.

Several of the moderators are not as active as they once were, but that does not mean I do not value their opinion greatly.

In case you are unaware, we often move items that could be offensive etc to the moderators area where it is discussed and a decision is made. That process is not instant, and various opinions make for a balanced outcome.

I am as laid back as they come, but must say some of the comments are dissapointing. Being a moderator is a thankless task. All these guys who have come on are doing it for the community as a whole. You should support them, not b1tch and moan. You watch how many are on at say 2am in comparisson to how many users are on at that time.
Likewise a dodgy post at 9am on a weekday might see 90% of the mods at work and not on the forum.
Would you prefer the offensive material remain until 5pm when people begin returning home ?

I am very grateful to the moderation team, even if some users are not.
Told you it was a thankless task :(

Regards
G

i think thats were a lot of forum arguements occur- sometimes it can be hard to tell whats a joke, a whats a bit of a dig. Text and smilies just arent as good as tone of voice.

I can understand why big G repsoned as he has- after all thats happened lately. It cant be easy.

I really appreciate what he's doing to keep this forum going, and thats why i offered to help out.

A moment ago there 45 members online.
Of which there was only two moderators and one member of Admin.

We have over 11,000 members
10 registered today, 10 registered yesterday.

Now while a relatively small percentage of members posts, there is still an average of around 400 posts a day.

In the last couple of days I've removed 4 threads, moved 4 and PM'd the relevant members. I am sure this is also the case with other mods on the forum.

Now with future expansion in mind there is a need for fresh faces among the moderation team, not only to keep things in check but to balance opinions. And while some of the moderation team aren't as active as they once where, they still bring experience to key decisions made on the forum.

Most of the time, I'm online from 10pm to 1.30am - which is an odd time for most, but nonetheless it's cover for moderation! :)

As you can appreciate this certainly isn't the right amount of time to dedicate to actually 'running' the forum, I class it as the late night shift ;) - and am glad to still be of use in some way.

Would have hoped peeps would have eased off the criticism a little, it's only positive moves - inactive moderators have stepped down and active members have been appointed in their place? I fail to see where the problem is.

The team is expanding, as plans for RT is to expand and offer more to the community.

My usual hours are from around 7pm to 2am, although I often am around online later - till 4 or 5am, covering the graveyard slot. In the mornings I'm not normally on till 10ish and then sporadically throughout the day.

I am on or near a PC at almost anytime I'm not underneath a rover so If I'm not actually about please feel free to PM me or another member of the team and we will do our best to get here quickly.

Different members of the team will have different hours that they are about - and obviousally commitments in their own lives which means ideally you would want at least two mods online at any one time so you have cover if ones not about. At peak times there maybe more about, but thats only logical really. :)

I am more active now than I have been for ages - just to hellp ease the transition. No I dont moderate anything like enough but I do try and let the guys here know what works elswhere, and my experience stems back from the first days of Rover200.com. Roverload and Rovertech evolved from Rover200.com, which in turn evolved from the old yahoo chat group - thats a lot of admin/mod experience to throw away!

I still have a full time role helping to administer CRX-UK, However my commitment to all other forums has completely diminished.
I am only really on here or CRX-UK these days - though I was looking at yet a replacement 216 ragtop yesterday on Ebay :)

TBH Walsh - you should expect some sort of comeback for making a comment like that publicly.
A smiley says a thousand words, so if it was a joke - at least include a smiley.
I feel for Geraint - all he's had so far is grief! And comments like that don't help matters do they? :|

Phew! Just as well you used a smiley there - otherwise it could have been misinterpreted as being a snide remark!

Seconded :)

And thanks to Grant & Bjorn for all the hard work they have put in over the years!

This is a great technical site... I for one definatly couldn't have done all the work/mods I have done to my cars over the years without all the knowledgable & helpful people on here going out of their way offering advice!

Cheers, John :)
