Very effective way of cleaning parts. I found I you wait until about 1am it will be ok with the missus, just ensure you get up before she does and lose tw evidence.

Take your self to cars pares and pick up 5ltrs of degreasing agent (gunk or equiv) I don't use gunk cause it has a strong smell.

Need some stiff brushes / spray bottle / large pan tray, I use a large cat
Litter tray.

Spay item to clean , give it a while to soak in with a few more sprays aling route.
Work the heavy deposites with brushes / spray and clean off with hose / jet wash.

Things that I want to paint get a cycle thru the dishwasher to remove surface traces only and are removed using clean gloves then hung and sprayed ASAP.

As said use rubber gloves or your hands / skin takes a battering.

Cheers

Petrol is a very effective cleaner. Use in a well ventilated area though.
