General rant - rust

Post by vinny19791 »

Decided this afternoon to do my once every 2 year strip down of the rear arch/skirt and keep an eye on corrosion and muck etc on our zr. Last time I removed the plastic arch liner, cleared it out etc and kept on top of the surface rust on the arch lips and the sill area under the skirt.

So off it came, whoah what the, yeah its took hold nicely  No rust has yet made it onto the rear quarters which im content with, just the lips which I once again de rusted, added my clarkes rust remedy ( big bottle from machine mart,) which is very corrosive. Then red primer ( proper old stuff ) and finally a liberal coat of random black paint.

Unfortunately this time the rear sill is weak, maybe an inch in, and the inner wheel arch at bottom near sill cavity is also horridly corroded.

pretty pissed about this as the car has never got in a state and has done 35k in 5 years. Just shows how poor rover got regarding materials and protection towards the end ( mines a 55 zr) when 6 feet away sits my 1993 hatch gsi with sills and arches in 90% better condition

anyway I feel better now

I feel your pain mate, I am desperately saving up to have a garage built to house my fleet so I
can attempt to lengthen the shelf life of them and stop the advance of tin worm. :(

Oh and add the following on the end of each of your photobucket links: ~original

Get yourself some bilt hamber anti rust products! Deox gel to remove all rust, electrux primer to prevent it coming back then get a good layer of base coat after! Once dry, Dynax U50!
