Accidentally smashed my tv - resolved cheques in post

Post by vinny19791 »

So anyway, foolishly I have just accidentally hit the bottom of my tv, at the bottom, and smashed it with nice spider cracks going up the screen :|

Now just gone through my insurance and luckily I am covered, however, its a 60" plasma.

They wont repair it and will more than likely offer me new for old, which I guess is great bar the excess :x but, they dont do 60" plasma's anymore.

And the price I paid for this a couple of years ago during some crazy black friday crash isnt close to what they cost now so im confused how this is going to go?

Does anyone have any ideas? Its still on the wall and making cracking noises

Time for a 55" or 65" UHDtv then. They can be had for reasonable money now and if the insurance company are offering you new for old and the excess is £100 then that's cheap.

A UHD panel is all well and good, but you'll have to spend big money to get anywhere near the black levels and image quality of a good plasma. Some people even say you have to fork out for an OLED panel to get near.

Vinny, no doubt you'll have to replace the panel but finding one will be tough. Unless you can find a faulty TV with a good panel but bad PSU for example. What TV is it?

its a LG 60pb660v

Waiting on my insurers to call, but the tv still works fine, just need to replace the screen

OLED looks nice but for a 60" is like £2000

So my insurers want an engineers report for the tv or quote to repair.

Now around here not sure if the same everywhere there are virtually no tv repair men, not anyone official anyway who can make a statement saying " yes the tv is smashed" as opposed to bob from down the pub scribbling something down to that effect

On the plus side they will pay, just awaiting this report

A shop in Kings Lynn ( an hour away ) will do a report once they have seen the tv, though at 60" its rather large to be lugging in the back of a zafira

Tell your insurance company to man up and get one of their inspectors to come and examine it. Asking you to get a report is out of order.
When my Sony DVD recorder suffered catastrophic death by lightning, my company sent an engineer round who promptly announced it was indeed dead and sent a report to them and they paid out for a new one.
Now you're going to tell me your with Direct Line aren't you ?

If you're getting the cash, how about a 2nd hand plasma?

I bought a 3 year old calibrated Panny GT50 for £500 last year. Still under warranty too! That's what, a £1500 TV with the calibration being a couple of hundred quid on top.

People generally don't want plasmas due to depth, heat and power consumption so there are some real quality displays out there for peanuts. The GT50 is hardly bulky.

I need at least a 60" Andy? I like your thinking, plasma's if looked after a very hardy. I had a 42" samsung that I bought in 2009, It was probably on for 20 hours a day for 5 years and still used a fair bit the last few years. It finally died this year, wouldnt turn on.

It was buried at sea

Well, the tip :D

I have a 4 year old plasma upstairs in a bedroom, one of the boys has it for gaming mostly so its been pretty good and took a lot of use, then 3 led's

I hate led's, ideally I want an OLED but silly money tbh.

Still have this broken one on the wall as it technically works but not sure how much longer I can hold off. I have the cash burning a hole, and through currys I have a 10% discount code, then a further 10% thanks to Royal Mail

But that still puts OLED's out of my price range,

the money this tv is going to cost could seriously put my rover back on the road :w00t:

There's a 55" Panny VT50 on eBay for £575 at the moment. Ok, it's not quite your 60" but probably the biggest you'll find. Such a shame the Plasma market dropped off. Once Pioneer moved on, Panasonic took the throne and did a stunning job.

Bit of a Panasonic plasma fan here if you hadn't noticed, haha.

I bet your Samsung only died because the PSU went. Pretty common on the old Samsungs tbh.

What sort of settlement did you get from the insurer? Could you buy that VT50 and throw in some rovernomics? Haha

Hi guys. Not posted in a while. I have a TV workshop, I may even have a 60" panel for your old tv.

I would need the part number from the back of the display so you'll have to take the back off Vinny.

Yes. No rush, just find out the screen part number and we'll see if we have a match.

There is a small risk that by turning your tv on with the smashed screen may have damaged some boards though...

Let's see if the part numbers match first though and we'll go from there.
