new uk 4WD 1/4 mile record

Post by Ish »

Keith Cowies R32 GTR ran at Avon park this weekend, this was his best run :o

1/4 Mile....9.632 sec @ 148.14 mph
60ft...........1.605 sec
330ft.........4.143 @ 112.66mph
660ft.........6.24 sec
990ft.........8 sec

he had 150+ to 160mph terminals on his other runs, but with poor 60ft due to traction. (ie 2-2.9s 60ft!)

i was there too. that skyline is stupidly fast!! i liked how he waited for 4 seconds for the corsa to try and get away down the stip before he started! LOL :D

my mate in his torquise astra was running poor times today. 210bhp with same torque and the best he managed was a 15.2
TF 160... possibly a 250bhp turbo in the future?!

Erm... there's a UK-based road legal Calibra that runs low 8s - he won the pump gas drags in the states last season.

Still impressive though!

was that on road legal dot marked tyres though Olly ?

I think i've seen that calibra, and whilst it is road legal, it really does stretch the realms of it as it's not even driven to events if it's the one i'm thinking of....goes in pro class at USC etc.....silly quick, but no way it's fully road legal at time of it's runs etc.....

I think so... last time I saw it it was on very wide but treaded and road legal mickey thompson tyres, and took part in the drive-to-the-petrol-station part of the competition.

I reserve the right to be completely wrong though :o)

thats the one....they have to actually make it to the petrol station and back and it makes it road-legal, lol

wouldn't of thought it could be driven too far though.

I suppose that's what makes it a grey area, as i would put Keith's Skyline in the fully road legal catergory along with the sumo, crd supra, norris and rc evo's

anything that goes in pro class and runs on drag slicks is not exactly the same competition.
no doubt it's road legal when it needs to be, but i don't think it's comparing like for like really....tough to draw the line though ;)

Seen threads about this Calibra before as well, and also there have been a few discussions on other forums based up here about what is and isnt road legal. The point I guess is that satisfying the usual, mot, tax, drive to the petrol station parts of regulations, falls a long way short of what most people would call road legalusing their own common sense,

However, regulations need to be drawn up for competitions and records, and how do you quantify common sense?

Keith's story:-

Well where do I start.

Sorry for keeping this weekend a secret from everyone apart from Dave Wilkins
the reason for this was that I did not want everyone and there mother there expecting
me to run a good 1/4 mile time straight away.

We were having big problems with the car not wanting to go in a straight line when
on full power in 3rd,4th,5th and 6th gear, all I am going to say is that it was very dangerous
not knowing what way the car was going to go at 100+ mph.

On Saturday all we wanted to do was set the car up so that it would run a straight 1/4 mile
after playing with the wheel alignment and damper settings we had it going in a straight line
and it now feel's 100% safe to drive flat out.

The next job on Sunday was to get it to launch off the line, spent the whole day trying different
things with the Autronic software, but it kept bogging big time on the line
the car still managed to get up to 154 mph with a crap start,I was getting a bit annoyed that it
would not go off the start how I wanted it to,so I called Mark Shead from MAD and he told me
that the software needs another control box before the launch control will work as it should
part now on order from Autronic in Australia.

On the Monday I went for 2 slow runs to warm the engine and the transmission up then
I tried a run,it still bogged a bit with the launch control set at 8000 revs I did a 10.17
here is the times from the slip below.

1/4 Mile....10.17 sec
60ft...........1.801 sec
330ft.........4.628 @ 112.62mph
660ft.........6.81 sec
990ft.........8.591 sec
Terminal speed was 146.96mph

I was getting a bit pi$$ed off by now so I switched off the launch control and rolled up
to the startline again gave it everything off the line it took off,it caught me out a bit but I was
away without any bogging this time, everything was going ok until I missed 4th gear,I then
put it into 4th gear gave it everything in 4th then 5th and crossed the line,I thought it would be
another low 10 sec pass,I got a surprise when I was told I had done a 9.63.
we left the car to cool down a bit before running it again,we were about to run the car and the sky's opened
up and the strip was a washout,to say that I was gutted is a under statement I think the car could
have done a very low 9 sec pass on the day.

I now know that there is a lot more to come from this car and myself
this is the first time that I have driven the car in anger since TOTB and to drive it
flat out for the first time is very daunting to say the least

Very very happy

Yeah the Calibra is just the shell basically isn't it?
And that holds the record for fastest 1/4 in street trim.
A mate of mine at work has a Charger, and said that the bloke with that Calibra, thought he'd go and race the best muscle cars in the world. So he went over to the US and beat everything there too. Apparently you can get away with slicks over there in street trim. :)

I'm only going off what he said though.

yeah the calibra is really just a shell, with a very big V8 engine and alot of NOS (for those pedantic people, Nitrous Oxide)

if you think about it there isnt really alot checked on the cars in this country to pass an MOT, so passing that and taxing and insurance would be easy.

Are you kidding?

Actually I don't think it will. It doesn't have neons or an alloy tax disc holder.

Now you've all got me wondering how much nitrous I'd need to get the Morris to run an 8.0... and how tight the bicycle clips would have to be to prevent leakage at 180mph :o)

All these cars are ace.

Can that R32 stop just as quick or is it using a parachute?

I know a good test of road legal, sit and pass a driving test in your car... A bit extreme maybe but no one could argue then that it wasnt totally drivable under all normal circumstances.
